  1. Benefits and the Web
David R. Baker, David Rhett Baker P.A.
David Baker is a pension attorney who publishes BenefitsLink on the World Wide Web. He will show you how to use the Internet for employee benefits information from government and private web sites. Transferring files over the Internet, advertising opportunities on the Internet, a discussion of emerging technologies applicable to benefits practitioners, and recommendations for advanced Internet users, including how to get started writing interactive programs for your web site, will also be highlighted.

  2. International Benefits 101
Douglas J. Carey , Hewitt Associates LLC
This workshop will provide an overview of social security systems and employer-sponsored programs around the world. Emphasis will be on those countries where practices are materially different from the United States and where attentive management of employee benefits plans can have a positive impact on business results. While the workshop will not assume prior knowledge of how non-US plans work, it will progress rapidly so that those who have a familiarity with benefits outside the US will find it interesting. Participants should be prepared to share experiences from their own companies for discussion.

  3. NYS Hospital Deregulation
Jacob Flaltz, William M. Mercer, Inc.
The New York Health Care Reform Act of 1996 discontinued the 13-year old system of state set hospital rates and moved us to a free-market system of negotiated rates between hospitals and payers. By deregulating hospital charges and allowing price competition among health plan administrators, NYHCRA has had a significant effect on the health care marketplace in New York state. Mr. Flaitz will provide you with a practical and informative insight into both the short-term and long-term implications of the law and also will discuss the impact that deregulation has had in other markets outside New York state.
